William C. Dunn, P.E. is a Florida licensed professional engineer and President of SunCam, Inc. He has practiced engineering as a licensed professional since 1976.

Mr. Dunn has been engaged in civil engineering design as a highway designer, utility engineer, land developer, and consulting engineer. He has been a pioneer in the development of spreadsheet-based engineering tools for hydraulics, electricity, airport design and high-speed rail, including the 1990 publication of a book of computer-generated reverse curve tables for high-speed trains.

Former Chief engineer for the Florida High-Speed Rail Corporation and former Board Member, Florida High-Speed Rail Authority. Appointed by the President of the Florida Senate.

Former Board Member, Miami-Dade County Environmental Quality Control Board, a quasi-judicial board, appointed by the Board of County Commissioners, that grants variances to environmental laws and appeals of decisions of the Director of the Department of Environmental Resources Management.

Course Description:

Railroad Curves

Centrifugal force is a function of both train speed and track curvature. If trains operated at a low velocity or on a straight track, centrifugal force would not factor into the engineering of a railway, but high speeds and curved track require an engineered solution. That solution is superelevation which is also known interchangeably as "cant".

This course will teach the physics of centrifugal force and the mathematics used by railroad engineers to select a cant angle and spiral transition curve that provides a comfortable ride and minimizes wear on rails and wheels."Rail-Curve" is the FREE spreadsheet software that comes with the course and takes care of all the number crunching so that we can concentrate on the principals of railroad curve design and evaluation.
