While the program provides instant answers to complex issues, I would prefer a little more math. I have found that verification of programmed results will protect the engineer in questionable problems especially during expert witness testimony in courts. A understanding of the program assumptions is required as well as an understanding of the math describing what is being designed.

Good material and explanations of the peculiarities of pipe flow.
The software is a bit clumsy. The row 6 and column B should be "frozen."
A discussion of and presentation of significant digits could be included. A mention, at least, of nominal pipe size vs internal diameter could be noted.
We recommend that you use Microsoft Excel to open the software. Look-likes don't work well. The software works perfectly in Excel.

Since I have become somewhat of an expert in my particular field of engineering, I have trouble finding any PDH courses in my field that would increase my knowledge, or provide any useful information I don't already know. Therefore, I chose this course related to interests I have in developing a future homestead on undeveloped property that I own. This may involve design of rainwater catchment systems, drainage systems, and so forth.
The fundamentals learned in this course provide a first step toward achieving these goals. Even if I don't do the design work myself, understanding the fundamentals will enable me to intelligently interact with consulting and/or county engineers who do this type design work. The Manning Formula spreadsheet provided with the course is an excellent tool for manipulating the formulas. The practice and test problems were interesting and practical. The documentation was clear and easy to follow and understand.
I would highly recommend this as a first course to anyone interested in design of gravity flow water systems.

Good course to familiarize engineers with what seems to be a very nice tool. However, I didn't have MSExcel and couldn't get it to work in Open Office Calc. Made for a good review of Manning Formula calculations.

A Superb Course
Course material presented the non-intuitive aspects of the effect that wetted perimeter has on flow in partially full pipes with clarifying graphics.
Several very interesting examples used to show how the Manning formula has been used to solve real life problems.
The excellent software provided takes calculation out of the picture as getting results is reduced to data input.
Would have been nice had some of the example problem creativity been incorporated into the questions.

Good course for all levels of experience. I like the software and found it very usable to everyday working situations I would recommend a clear button to remove existing data to prevent any existing data from mistakingly being left to avoid errors and improve ease of use.
Author Response: A clear button would be easy enough but it would mean including a macro with the file. Most firewalls block any download that includes a macro so we leave it out to improve deliverability.

Excellent course material with real world examples to study as well as test questions. Concise explanation of equations and "Manning-Pipe" Excel Software. The use of the software along with the written material with pertinent charts gives one a different perspective on the components of the Manning equation(s). Having personal experience with power plant design requiring numerous hydraulic structures, such as outfall piping, etc., I especially appreciated the author's explanation and cautionary note regarding designing at flows at 93.82%. This was taught in college but never fully explained concerning its risk. Enjoyed the real-world examples because I had personally worked on projects that were very similar. This speaks for the test questions also. There is much to be learned here, and the value of the course is much better than other 8 hour classroom courses. This material is a great review of the subject and provides up-to-date information. I recommend careful study. The software alone is worth the full cost of the course. I now look to SUNCAM for my training.

Plug and play can be dangerous. While there was a bit of theory in the handout, the test was solely based on the spreadsheet and could be done with zero engineering knowledge.
Author Response: The software eliminates the mindless number crunching so the engineer can focus on the "engineering". The ability to make small adjustments in the inputs allows the engineer to do sensitivity testing and optimization. Anyone with a basic knowledge of algebra can solve the Manning Formula but math is not all there is to engineering.

Very good course with excellent practical test questions. I note that the Excel spreadsheet doesn't appear to use the correction factor for n-partial vs n-full. On a few cases I ran, the calculated capacities were 10-15% different from other spreadsheets that do use the n-partial correction factor.

Lament of an old engineer
I have been doing drainage design since 1962 and I thought I knew all there was to know about Manning. I took this course because I figured it would be 4 easy credits. What a surprise to get the Excel spreadsheet that comes with the course. What a time saver. If I had a copy of this software in 1962 I would be 5 years younger now just from the time it saved me. Enjoyable Application-Oriented Course
Thoroughly enjoyed this course, which is geared toward the application of the Hazen-Williams equation and use of the provided software. While the course material does cover the theoretical nuances of the equation (e.g. multiple solutions for specific variable inputs), the test focused on application of the equation and problem-solving with fairly real-life scenarios. As such, the course, software and test were practical, which is very welcome.

This course provided a beneficial summary for the usage of the Manning Formula in computing gravity flow in conduits. With the assistance of a user friendly Excel spreadsheet, one can easily compute pipe characteristics, flow, or hydraulic parameters in seconds. The course document was well written and easily understood, with the possible exception of determining total head loss through a computed system. This course, the software and the questions reinforced my confidence that I know how to get a correct answer. The software is great because many conversions are made automatically so you don't have to worry about making an error going e.g. from MGD to liters per minute. The only suggestion I would have would be to have a clear all inputs button. For the course, further discussion of using the formula for other shapes would be helpful.

Great course! Usually good testing system but as I was reviewing my answers some how question #7 shifted .... This should not be able to happen by usingthe up arrow on keyboard! Once and answer is selected it should require a click to change it not the up arrow. Yeah That was the only answer wrong but it is simple and the principle that I could have changed others scolling back up through the test!
A portion of this comment was removed because it revealed the answer to one of the questions. Also, we have been unable to replicate the problem described.

I found this course to be comprehensive to the materials presented, presented using a different and interesting approach through the use of the Manning Excel spreadsheet,and the manner of presentation kept me interested throughout the course. For those of us who don't want to use the software provided the questions should be in units that we all use on a daily basis. I've never encountered any project that required the use of the liters, millimeters, etc.

Clear instruction for the scope outlined
The scope of the course covers Mannings formula for cases of round conduits (pipe) without consideration of entrance/exit losses. The material is presented very clearly with examples and practice problems - zero confusion. Thanks.

I thought this course was well worth the time, unlike the rules and laws course requirement. The software provided is very good and I am sure I will use it in the future. I thought this was an excellent course. Manning's equation was very well presented. I have used spreadsheets for years to do pipe sizing, and other, calculations - but never in the detail that the included spreadsheet does. This is an excellent design tool.

I have been involved with the design & installation of process and power piping for over 40 years. Taking a look at gravity flow was actually fun with your Excel spreadsheet. I'm not sure I'd want to tackle the problems with the old slide rule.

The Manning Equation software is a godsend, without it I am sure that my calculations would have had errors that I may not have caught. Manning Equation calculations can be very tedious, but with the software they are a breeze!

The version of the sofware I downloaded requires input of % full as a whole number (i.e. pipe flowing full, enter '100') but the course instructions indicate that this sould be entered as a fractional % (i.e. pipe flowing full = '1').
