Good course, but I disagree with the question regarding the US adopting metrification. This was tried by FDOT many years ago, but US contractors and manufacturers refused to retool or change their manufacturing processes. Are the taxpayers to bear the brunt of the enormous costs just so we can conform with the rest of the world? So far the unanimous consensus has been a resounding
"no."

good course. though I thought the argument for the metric system is not an topic relevant for ethics. It should be noted that metric vs. Imperial is akin to another language, as people can "visualize" a standard of measure and then mentally translate into the new measure standard. Not so much with engineers, but with constructors is where the issue primarily lies. I had been tasked to teach the metric system to "old school" superintendants and foremen back in the 1990s in metric when the FDOT unilaterally adopted the metric system. these talented men and women could not visualize metric units of measurement and this led to lots of frustration. you can learn metric in school, but on the job you learn from those older than you who in turn learned it from those older than them. this is not a knock on the metric system, its decimal system has huge advantages, but it may be harder to implement than you think.

"True law is right reason in agreement with nature; it is of universal application, unchanging and everlasting; it summons to duty by its commands, and averts from wrongdoing by its prohibitions... There will not be different laws at Rome and at Athens, or different laws now and in the future, but one eternal and unchangeable law will be valid for all nations and all times, and there will be one master and ruler, that is God, over us all, for He is the author of this law, its promulgator, and its enforcing judge." by Marcus Tillius Cicero (106 to 43 BC) of the Roman Republic.
There is less than a millimeter difference between good Ethics and good Morals. Your class on Ethics (Sun Cam # 224) would be a good first class for beginning engineers.

This course seemed to be as much an update on efficient modern practices in engineering design as it teaches about ethics. Overall it was good course. It was interesting to know that standardization such as the metrics system is considered as part of good ethics.
Some have complained angrily that metrics does not belong in an ethics course. I included it because there is nothing that would have a greater impact on worldwide efficiency than adopting a single system of measurement. It's a human welfare issue.

Decent course, this is a hard topic to cover. A couple ethical issues I have seen in forensic engineering that could be added are 1) clients have requested the engineer to change their opinion, 2) Engineers giving any opinion their clients need to benefit the client monetarily, 3) giving engineering opinions that may not be truthful to try and sway a jury's decision or force higher settlements, 4) an engineer examining a site and not informing anyone, the site is demolished, having opposing experts examine the site after demolition and publish their reports, then publishing his/her responses to these reports having examined the site pre-demolition, 5) using pictures which are unclear in reports, saying picture depicts a certain type of damage, and then claiming damage observed is typical throughout the facility examined even though damage does not exist. These are just a few examples I have seen in real life.

In my practice as an MEP building systems consulting engineer, many times I have encountered a preference by architects for a ' dumb ' engineer. A ' dumb ' engineer apparently is one who is frequently ignorant of some of the many code requirements for a project. This results in items which should be included are not, resulting in a lower project cost. Which makes the ' dumb ' engineer the preferred consultant to employ. I would like to see code knowledge become a requirement for a P.E. license. The ethical angle for this comment is that some ,' dumb ' engineers actually know better and just pretend to not know, or do not keep current with applicable codes. I would like to see this topic included in / expanded upon in your course. This kind of conduct actually exists, particularly in less populated markets. I thought the course was excellent. Thank You.

I did not agree with some of the statements, especially regarding optimization. Engineers are required to give a safe design that is reasonably economical, but to provide "the" optimum is impossible. There could be many solutions and given enough time and resources a better one, closer to optimum could be found. But to provide the single optimum solution at the outset is not reasonable.

First, even though I am a very senior engineer, I learned several things from this course that I will put into practice, particularly I will design and calculate in metric! I understand where the English method of dimensioning can from: That you can always mechanically divide something in half with great accuracy...hence inch, half inch, etc. And the English system of weights and measures came from early standards of the density of water, etc. I don't know if I believe that the metric system is more logical!
There are a couple of suggestions that I would make to improve the content: The ability to recycle a product or assembly economically, was not mentioned. That is of great utility overall to our planet and all within. In the section on software, no mention of a data input error was found. If you verify a result using a second software package, that error will likely not be found. The order of beginning an analysis I suggest should be: Guess the result, do hand calculations, then follow-up with details using software. The hand calculations must predict the software solution. Engineers must always be able to do the hand calculations, and not rely on two software packages! When I mentor engineering students, I always strongly suggest they buy and keep their engineering textbooks, as those are the written references they are most familiar with, and can be referred to throughout their lives, without the reliance on "the cloud" or other crutch, that may not be there even in the near future. Your comment about teaching, and how it strengthens the teacher's knowledge of the subject through interaction with student questions and discussion, is very true. The importance of live classes with teachers and students cannot be overstated. Best regards,

Good overall review. Especially agreed with fact that ethics should be learned at home, and should not be dependent on Boards or Societies. Laws are made for the lawbreakers, not for those who live within the laws due to their upbringing.

In addition to the respect issues discussed, I think it a good practice to avoid text and email responses to criticism or conflict. Email and texts have the distinct problem of being read without context, control of environment or state of mind. Face to face, in private or telephone conversation is a much more controlled and reliable way to resolve issues.

I’ve taken several of your continuing education courses and I am satisfied. Currently I am taking the course 224-Ethics for U. S. Engineers.
I take exception to your section on “Have I optimized?”
My concern is on two levels, 1) the near impossible task of getting a perfect design, and 2) the real word constraints of fees for designs and submitting bids for engineering services. I address each below.
1. Webster on line dictionary defines Optimize “to make perfect, effective or functional as possible.” This is nearly an impossible task on any project. For example, if you design a roadway 2 miles long, and have one cubic yard of fill that is not needed, your design is not optimized. (How would you know the design has one extra cubic yard of fill?) To meet your standard, the engineer should re-do the earthwork to eliminate that cubic yard. But alas, the land survey needs to be redone with more existing spot elevations to do a more complete design. In practice, we design to a point that is good enough.
2. NSPE code of ethics does not prohibit clients from bidding engineering services, nor does it prohibit engineers from responding to bids. If the bid specifications do not require optimization of the design, is the engineer obligated to provide one? I recall a bid situation for a highway, where the low bidding engineering firm was about 10% below others. After the project was built, I drove it to see where the engineer saved design hours. I was amazed that the 6-lane divided highway was designed with one project grade line (PGL) along the center of the road. A bridge was on a curve, and with one PGL, the clearance over the underneath road was 16.5 feet on the inside of the NB side and about 2 feet on the outside of the SB side. The cost for the additional height of the SB Bridge and approaches was probably between $1 million to $5 million. Which was more than the design fee. Other firms probably had staff time for two PGLs, but they were not the successful bidder. Did the low-bid engineering firm have an obligation to loose money to the detriment of their owners, employees and other clients because one client selects low bidders for engineering services? I think not.
I have also designed roadways for contractors in design-build bids. They based their bid on about a 30% alignment and we were not given much more fee to reduce the cost, just finish that 30% design if our team won. We work for the contractor, not the owner, to design a project that is safe to the traveling public, meets the code of ethics and meets the requirements of the design-build bid documents.
Project management teaches us we must balance the scope, schedule and cost for an engineering project. If the client reduces the cost, we must reduce scope and/or schedule accordingly.
And yet it falls to engineers to optimize more than any other profession. Don't confuse optimizing with perfection.

It was a very different presentation of ethics than what I expected. It was a very high level approach at an ethics discussion. I thought it would have more examples and discussion related to PE license issues, particularly related to violations and suspensions. But it was very thought provoking and liked the way the topic was presented. "Public Welfare" is not the easiest term to define but I believe the author made his point.

My congratulations to the author for taking the time to produce it. If Moses had created 10 commandments for Engineers, I think they would have had a lot in common. This Ethics course is well written, though possibly contains opinions of the Author best left to coffee table discussions. The use of the metric system, for instance, though more necessary in international analyses, is not an ethical dilemma - just another system of measurement for our use.
A discussion of the ethics of forensic engineering would be an applicable additional topic. We who find ourselves explaining the cause and extent of failure are often in a grey area of opinion - often making opinions without a full set of analyses or a full representation of the condition prior to failure.
Opinion plays a significant role in everything we do as engineers.

I prefer ethics courses that present ethical dilemmas for me to ponder and consider how I would behave. This course did not provide that. Many opportunities exist to illustrate these dilemmas, such as constant battles between quality, schedule and budget. I think the author should consider including some examples to make the student think. As this course stands, it requires about 25 minute to read followed by 5 minutes to take the test. Easy. Should I consider this to be 1 hour of PDH credit as advertised, or just 30 minutes?

Official test answers are not true / correct.
In Question 3 it was given that there was no one to review. . .
In question 6 it incorrectly states that the US will adopt metrification and manufacturers worldwide will benefit. This is ***very false**. . . Therefore, the world benefits by the US not retooling to the metric system. Besides retooling costs money.
Official test graders should avoid pushing thier opinions on others expecially if they are wromg.
Portions of the review have been removed because they disclosed answer to test questions. The reviewer took exception to the correct answers to questions 3 and 6. We have reworded question 3 slightly, to eliminate any confusion. We stand by our question and answer to # 6.
Ethics courses are, by their nature, the author's opinion. They are neither laws nor rules and there is ample room for disagreement. Any qualified professional who would care to express her/his own opinion about professional ethics is welcomed to submit a course for publication.

A unique approach to this subject. It takes a holistic view of "ethics" as all the attributes and techniques needed to serve the "public welfare" (that broadly defined as providing optimal, best-practice engineering services). Therefore, the inclusion of things like CADD, metrification, software verification, and 2nd party work checking are just as logical as the "traditional" ethics attributes of honesty, integrity, avoiding any conflicts of interest, owning up to mistakes, etc. It's certainly thought-provoking...exactly what a course on ethics should do.

You are correct that the portion about metrification and perhaps CADD might not be the best for an ethics course. In all honesty those paragraphs sounded more like a sales pitch. Good course non - the - less. Enjoyed my first time with your company.

Great material.
Course went quickly.
One comment on Question 7 I misread the word "Ineffective"
as "an effective".
Would suggest "not effective" for us who read too fast.
Did learn form my mistake, that should have read question statement closer and more thoroughly.
Look forward to more of your courses.

I think ethics is something your inner being knows w/o a lot of codes to guide you. . . . can see the benefit of running things by a competent sort in the area. I always insist Clients read what I write before, as a Patent Attorney, submitting an Application to a Patent Examiner. So I guess I do what is suggested naturally. Some guidelines exist as moral codes, but my feel is if it seems shady at all, don't do it. And, moral codes are not always appropriate in specific circumstances to which they ---seem--- to apply. You have to weight it yourself looking at all the facts, and be ready to defend whatever you decide. I've never had any ethics problems in 35 years of practice using that approach. This course made me think on a few things. On that basis I give it a high mark.
Portions of the review have been removed because they disclosed the correct answer to a question.

well written, with humility and insight, which is essential to such a topic. Perhaps the only improvement would be to phrase some of the questions which might be subjective in nature, "according to the materials for this course, ...". This would allow an engineer to accurately answer a question on the test to which he may not agree with the author on the answer.
Good suggestion.

Bill Dunn's essay on ethics is spot on. If engineers, if the world, followed these simple and reasonable recommendations how much better off would we be? I think much better. Politicians decry the loss of the US manufacturing base. Would metrification have helped? Who torpedoed that? Engineers should start leading. I vote Dunn for president. We could do much worse.

I thought the written material, supporting the test was well done. The preamble was well stated; difficult to preach morality (ethics) to a general audience. The topics selected were broad based and the discussion clear and interesting.
On a personal note, I missed the question about peer review. I have worked alone for years and have not considered seeking outside help. I check twice, hence my wrong answer, and the majority of my work is reviewed by government agencies (land development folks, etc.) But I may just have to consider seeking peer review.

Just a couple of suggestions:
1. Instead of the word "guess" to describe an en engineer's initial surmisal of a solution, consider using hypothesis, hunch, estimate or surmisal. To me, "guess" intimates little or no cognizance of the probable solution, which should not be the case.
2. President Reagan negotiated arms reduction with the Soviet Union (USSR), not Russia.
The term that I was tempted to use instead of "guess" was WAG. (wild ass guess).

Concise and to the point. Describes the current topics that engineers face in their practice with respect to clients, employers and trainees. The cautious use of software and the best guess "common sense" approach is a prudent way of evaluating a design at the onset.

I was very disappointed with this course. It had lots of opinions on how to be a good service provider (be on time, don't waste others time with war stories, etc.) that aren't really ethics issues. there are lots of ethical dilemmas that face engineers and I think they would benefit for case studies of difficult ethical choices.
I very much appreciate and respect the work that SunCam does and offer the above as a constructive suggestion for improving the education of Florida engineers.

OK, but I suggest adding a paragraph or two about business ethics, such as dealing with difficult clients, how to act when there are payment disagreements or disagreements about "over-engineering", and how the engineer should state the design standards they use. You might also include something about checking non-engineers work when they were not under your supervision. Although this is in the laws and statutes, we get asked this a lot by craftsmen and self-taught types, and all it does is put the PE at risk so that the craftsman can look good and save the client some money. The suggestion about trading checking with another engineer if you work by yourself is a good one, and so was the statement about us being perhaps the last generation to use the Imperial measurement system,
That's a lot to fit into a 1-hour course.

I found some of the topics within the course too opinionated for inclusion in the course. For example, the subjects of Metrification and Optimization. I have heard these opinions before, from Academia and Scientist. Industry tends to follow the money and makes business decisions to stay in business. As easy as it is for Academia to change the units in a text book, the cost of retooling where it is not necessary is prohibitive to converting to a metric system and would not be a good business decision. Where it is necessary, industry makes a business decision to pursue or pass. Regarding the Optimization and iteration of design, this too is greatly influenced by scope, schedule and budget. The engineer must always balance his scope, schedule and budget while serving the public and the client. Both examples, Metrification and Optimization, in my opinion, represent a gap between Academia and the real world and the path forward is not as clear as we would like. After all, it does no one any good to convert or optimize if their business health cannot be sustained.
Agreed! If it is not in the law, it's opinion. If it is in the law then it's a topic for Laws & Rules, not ethics.

Great course! Good and beneficial information for both the veteran and the new generation of engineers. Good moral and ethical content is intertwined in the presentation. Concerning the age of humanity as we know it, humans are only 6,000 years since Adam & Eve. But, there was a Pre-Adamic race that I would like to present to you based on the Bible and the discoveries of the Great Teachers, Scholar and Expositors of God's Word - The Bible. Bible means "The Book". This book has amazing truths concerning the history of man - it's origin, it's purpose and final destiny. The Bible Scholar who expounded the matter of the Pre-Adamic Creation is G. H. Pember, British (1836-1910). The book including this bible subject for the first time in Bible Expository Literature is titled: "Earth Early Stages". Adamic Creation is 6,000 yeas old; Pre-Adamic Cretation cronology is un-known from the Bible alone. If you wish, respond to this explanation. I have been blessed to study the Bible in some depth since Sept. 1980; and introduced to the Christian
Faith by two Practicing Structural Engineers (SE's) from California.

In general this is a good course and reminds engineers of many of our responsibilities that we may forget. However I disagree with the section about the metric system. Also in the section about respect I disagree that you gain respect by speaking out against injustice. What one person sees as injustice may be very different from the opinion of another. You may well lose respect rather than gain it. These two points seem to be more the author's political view rather than anything to do with ethics.

The course is doing an excellent way of defining ethics for Engineers. I also like the idea that the employer must also live up to the ethics requirements. When you design something, you should consider how to make it very easy to both operate and maintain. By making it very easy to both operate and maintain, you are PROTECTING THE HEALTH, WELFAIR AND THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC, by minimizing daily work. I also agree that Professional Engineers MUST earn respect. Professional Engineers must also both respect; as well as, use ideas to solve problems from NON engineers.

All in all, it's a good course. However, the course is directed toward engineers who work for a strictly engineering company. The majority of engineers that I know work for companies that are not primarily engineering firms--building contractors, pipeline contractors, oil and gas related companies including refineries, chemical plants, equipment fabricators, onshore and offshore construction and installation companies, service companies, and others.
Because of this, question 2 should be reworded as "employer" is not necessarily an engineer. If Mr Dunn bears this fact in mind the next time he revises the course, and adjusts some wording AND adds a few, and maybe asks someone who does not work for an Engineering Only firm to critique the course, the resulting revision will be much better
My initial inclination was to say that the answer to question 2

Regarding the metric system. The metric system is base 10. But almost all computing devices are base 2. You can apply binary coded decimal and other schemes to simulate decimal computing, but it comes at a loss of precision, and probably time, on a base 2 machine. Some of the Imperial units fit perfectly into base 2: the inch is traditionally divided into powers of 1/2, and the volumetric system also fits fairly well with base 2 (a quart is 1/4 of a gallon, a pint is half a quart, and so on). Also, the world seems to have rejected metric time for durations more than a few seconds.

Ethics is frame of reference for personal conduct as an engineer. Expanding the course (lab work) by visiting real life examples of ethical situations would be helpful. For example, I am the only engineer in my specialty within 100 miles. In this relatively rural setting, conflicts still arise as they would in the city. In this case there is only one engineer available to resolve the issue compared to the city, where each side of the issue is supported by a separate engineer. How does a solitary engineer provide an equivalent service without becoming involved in a conflict of interest?

Interesting Twist

I liked the humble "one engineer's viewpoint" nature of the course. Since the author invited comments for dialogue, here are mine: It is correct to want to consider the cost of the engineering work with the cost of the end product. But that may mean a "quick, first guess, simple design" is optimal even if the part is oversized, provided you are not making many, or it allows the use of inexpensive standardized pieces. -- International standardization of products is a good thing, but metric units are not more optimal than "English" units. The dimension and tolerances are important, not the unit system in which it is measured. -- I think respect should be conferred on all people in the absence of personal knowledge of the person's ability and character. Once you come to know them, then the respect can be lost and re-earned, but you should begin with respect.

Absolutely excellent. Made me think about my practice as a professional engineer as I hadn't in awhile. A very pragmatic approach to the topic. Have taken two other ethics courses in the past which were basically read the canon of ethics and we will present you with some hypotheticals to evaluate. Not very representative of the practical "protect the public health, safety and welfare". Somewhat unrealistic and more of a legal domain than professional engineering. As I recall, if I found myself in one or more of the hypotheticals, I may have wanted legal interpretation.
I found your brief course to be spot on as what I need to be thinking about when it comes to responsible, ethical practice. In addition to practical issues, e.g., software, collegial review, CADD, you highlight the key "ethics" issues an professional engineer is likely to encounter, e.g., qualification for opinions, risk, errors. It is just a document like yours that should be provided by the NCEES with professional engineer test and registration packets.

Nice, brief refresher. I especially liked the respect section, which we all would do well to re-read from time to time.
Not sure about the 6000 years comment being relevant to an engineering ethics course. Perhaps some non-religious supported data would be more appropriate (such as, archeologists have found man-made tools dating back as far as 1.8 million years).

I found the course to a useful reminder of key perspectives related to ethics. While I understand the opinions expressed regarding metrics and CADD (and generally agree with the point of view expressed) I struggle a bit that they present any real ethical dilemma for the professional engineer. Likewise, the comments regarding iterating a design to optimize it around physical resources is a perspective that is generally true but may lead one to spend inordinate capital and personnel resources on developing a solution that far exceeds the value of the solution and its long term value proposition for society. I enjoyed the course and the thought provoking comments that prompted my ratings.

Ethics for U.S. Engineers
On a 1 to 10 scale, of which 1 is poor and 10 is excellent, I would rate this course #224 at a "1". The text, that is writing itself, only touches on Ethics, and as I have found in other courses at Suncam, the questions do not match the important features of the subject matter. In cases the test questions are incidental to the scope o the course. The wording of Question #3 is improper. Other courses at Suncam are excellent. This one is poor.

Good start and introductory comments about the difficulty in preparing a course on ethics in engineering practice all extremely appropriate.
I took notice of the use of "US" in the course title? Us old gray hairs have all probably worked with "engineers" educated in and citizens of other countries! Ethics sometimes is an issue that comes to light when we have different backgrounds.
A suggestion for an expansion of the instructional text would be a description of the ethical relationship between the Professional Engineer and a client who provides instructions or directions related to his or her desired engineering conclusion. Particularly sensitive area when costs or profit motive is involved such as in the private sector (i.e. land development engineering). In other words when does a professional engineer say NO to his client!!??

Stick to Ethics
The material is thin on ethics doctrine and long on life coaching that is not related to ethics for Engineers. By no stretch of the imagination, should any rational person consider a lecture on the conversion to the metric system of measurements, as an honest component of ethics training. Instead, it is the author's shameless plug for a personal agenda. I also don't need a lecture on being punctual for meetings as part of ethics training either.

Overall content of the course was good- clear and concise. The only objection I had was to the use of the term "optimal". We are encouraged to avoid that term in contracts because it can be a subjective term which can result in unrealistic client expectations and can create liability exposure for a design professional.
Good point! Optimizing should be a natural part of your engineering ethic but don't put it in your contracts.

Overall, an excellent short course on ethics. This is a subject that all engineers should include as part of their continuing education, but I have found that real world experience is the best way to learn the importance of ethics. Often in my career I have had to make ethical decisions, and in some instances it has been on the fine line and not easy. I think the course material could have included a few examples of situations where an engineer is faced with a difficult choice.

I am retired from full-time employment, but still engage in the practice of engineering through teaching and mentoring. Although not all my students are professional engineers, what I have learned in this course will help me guide my students and encourage the practice of ethical behavior and respect for others, both on the job and in all aspects of life. This course contains many useful reminders of the need for professional responsibility, and I will recommend if to my colleagues.

Computer software has made engineering design automated, true or false? Do computer solutions require humans review outputs prior to initiating the manufacture, fabrication, construction and use of everything computers run software programs on? Does an engineer need to look at inputs and outputs
If engineering design is totally automated and we don’t even need an engineer or QA/QC humans anymore then let the computer and software sign and seal the design. This engineer is not going to take the computer’s “word” that it’s generated an automated working design…every time.

Thank you for allowing for different beliefs on how old the world is. That is appreciated.
I'm not sure I agree with your stances on metrification and engineering economy, though. Too many contractors in the US deal with too many items to change to metric without great cost. Why not allow the market to determine the standards that are best? And when it comes to engineering economy, sometimes having 20 of one type of item is less costly than having 20 different types of items. As a structural engineer, we're taken to task at times for overdetailing instead of making things similar, which makes it easier for detailers and contractors. As you even stated within the course, time and effort is a resource.
Good overall course on ethics. Thank you for your efforts.

Comments on PE PDH Course # 224 - Ethics for U.S. Engineers
Definitely not the caliber of course I have come to expect from SunCam! Worth what I paid for it [$0.00]. Needs rewriting from the beginning. Suggest presenting some legal case history examples relating to engineering ethics case law plus numerous 'what-if' scenarios with explanations behind the whys/whats/hows of a suggested 'best' solution/resolution. A difficult topic to 'teach' in this multi-cultural global community in which U.S. PEs now operate as the course material must by the very nature of ethics tread upon the moral principles underlying a multiplicity of cultural ethoses as well as the concomitant various legal aspects that lurk litigiously ready to prey upon PE ethics errors real or perceived.
Overall this was a childishly simpleminded pedagogical rambling under the umbrella of "ethics" mostly with author's positions/opines on optimization, standardization, predicting results, learning/teaching/mentoring, automation, CAD, software use, metrification, and puzzlingly a tangential few arguable sentences on a multi-faith engineering tooling history with a related test question thrown in to boot all in an ill fated attempt to draw some correlation to the engineer's responsibility to provide consideration for the public welfare somehow as related to all this in the matter of engineering ethics. Overall an extremely unprofessional mis-directed presentation on the important topic of PE ethics that got tangled in its own caveats about misuse of one's position as an engineer [read between the words PE] when it comes to qualifications, influence pedaling, teaching/mentoring, and respect.
We can discuss it when you're sober.

This course included some interesting comments on the benefits of metrication.
I didn't like the recommendation to "guess" the answer to a design problem before conducting engineering calculations. Perhaps better terminology would be to recommend "making an order of magnitude estimate".
We call it a "WAG" (wild ass guess). Call it anything you like but if it involves a calculator it is not a guess, it's a calculation.

Good Course, well put together, and thought provoking for sure. Over / under on when the US adopts metric system? While this course touches on ethics, it came across to me as more of an attempt to sell the author's beliefs, not the reality of ethics and its issues. I say this with more than 45 years as a P.E. Even though it's only 1 credit (and free at that) I expected more. Most of the questions could be answered without even reading the material.
We have found that all ethics codes and courses are personal opinion and much too preachy. With this course we have simply attempted to dial back the preachy.

Protecting the public should not be considered "onerous" or burdensome. Engineers should gladly perform their duties in a way that protects the public.
Ethics are principles of morality. Morality is a system of ethics. They are inseparable. They establish clearly the difference between right and wrong. We must do what is right because we oppose what is wrong.
Prof. codes should not be thought of as "merely opinions", because they are based on morals/ethics which define right and wrong.
The public welfare is not "indefinable." Moral/ethical principles are the guide to the best solution for all concerned parties.

Overall the course was very good. My only disagreement was the discussion on metrification. In manufacturing I agree as we are pretty much there already. I have lived in Europe and in Iran, have been in private practice thirty-seven years and have used the metric system extensively. I have found that decimal errors while using the metric system in construction related fields where I practice are far more common than errors in our English system. I expect that things will remain as they are for many decades in the future.

Some concrete examples of what happens when ethics are ignored or compromised would be appropriate. The names could be changed to protect the innocent...

Ethics in the workplace

11/23/2015
There are many ethical decisions that engineers have to make on a daily basis. This course poignantly covers many of them. However, it also makes some diversions into metrification and automation that don't seem to belong in this type of course. I enjoyed the beginning portion of the course, which helps to add clarity to right and wrong for the professional engineer. But, found the diversions took away from the course as a whole. I would have preferred to see more examples applying the presented ethical codes to realistic situations in a typical engineer's workplace.

The contents was well-written and cover so many areas that I had not considered. My only comment is that while most would agree that "engineering is an accumulation of knowledge dating back ...to the first tool makers, many would disagree that it dated back to 1.8 million years. Nonetheless I felt your CEU was very informative and appreciate your effort to address our obligations of integrity as engineers.

Ethics is tough to teach. Engineers need to be ever mindful of the line between right and wrong which has hopefully been taught by parent examples, public and religious education, organizations like Boy/Girl Scouts and organized sports. Accepting responsibility for your actions seems to be on the decline in today's society which is disturbing and sad to me. Sometimes we need to say 'No' even in this politically correct world when an assignment or project is not in the best interest of the public.

SunCam does a fine job of getting to the heart of the matter in an easy to follow style. They bring a fresh perspective to an otherwise tired subject, and transcend simple common-sense answers to many questions. 224 Ethics review
Difficult to build a course on this topic. Given a "requirement" to have one, this was as good as might be expected. (I wonder if something like this "requirement" exists for legislators, web developers, news-folks, insurers, bankers, and others who influence all our lives.)
As a 4th generation engineer, I have strong feelings about ethics. Those values developed and became ingrained, from an early age. Home, school, and life in general have evolved them over my life. I hope we all have had similar guiding values, and make any need to formalize the topic, non-existent. Appears others might not agree?
Early on, I told others, that I chose engineering because it was a way to apply science and theory in a practical manner, for the common good for all. I still believe that value rings true and is the basis of all engineering. Perhaps, some technology, social, legislative, commercial, or religious changes might suggest, or make possible, else wise; I still hold to that basic premise. Anything less would be unacceptable.
In looking this over, got to say, it's more in the manner of comment/feedback/opinion, and not as a public review of the course/ material/presentation.... so, guess not something to post publicly. Just read, them?
As I first said, not a simple topic. Think you did a good job, as the "first iteration" on the topic/course.
One more thought: I got an an email yesterday from group claiming to be from Univ. of South Florida, Department of Psychology, seeking input for a survey: "We are currently studying how engineers respond to things they are asked to do on their jobs that they find illegitimate." Appears they got/bought a list of FL PE's. and did a group email ..... funny that... wonder what they expect to get in response. For me, I declined, as I didn't trust it was a "real" study....suggest back that they review their approach vs. expectations... perhaps you might like to look into it further and see how that fits with our new FL requirements...odd topic to ask, to my thinking... :)

I also enjoyed the non-legalistic approach to the subject of ethics. And like other reviewers, I take exception to the statement that 'homo habilis' was the first toolmaker about 1.8 million years ago. (I left the question blank.) According to the Bible, man has existed for some 6000 years. The earth, though, existing long before man was created (Gen 1:1). The first toolmakers were probably animals who may have been around millions of years before mankind.

As usual, this course was very informative. Even though I have completed my PDH for this year, I enjoy learning and wanted to see your approach to ethics. There was one statement in the Learn/Teach/Mentor section of the course with which I take exception. As a Christian with a view that the events recorded in Genesis are literal and historically accurate, I believe that the earth is approximately 6 thousand years old, and Adam and Eve were the first people on Earth. It is likely that Adam must have made tools to till the ground. I do not accept that Homo habilis were the first tool makers.
It is not that I wish to be disrespectful of you or the course. I have a different world view. Thank you.

I appreciate the inclusion of teaching and mentoring as a part of ethics. While employed by a state agency, I noticed a severe lack of this activity (aside from a formal 18-month training program) and always provided experiential text records and verbal coaching for those serving under me - and require they continue the process. Surprise: some of those I coached would later coach ME when I was transferred to new positions in which they had experience! To provide an extra precaution that I had recognized and addressed as many issues as possible in plan reviews, I made a practice of setting aside my work for a couple of days and then revisiting them. It was not uncommon to find significant oversights upon a second inspection.

Review Aug 2015
The use of the word "guess" in the design process is erroneous (in my opinion. An engineer's design goes thru an iterative process in achieving a final set of documents that receives the engineer's stamp. This iterative process is based on the engineer's education, working under other engineer's prior to sitting for his/her PE test. As a PE doing design, the engineer often works with coworkers, contractors, owners, and others and listens to their input in arriving at the final
design.
An engineer does not guess; rather he/she uses their knowledge (from education
and work experience) to design equipment, a process, a building, an environment that meets a client's needs and requirements.

Tool-Making 1.8 millions years ago?
There is only forensic/historical science based evidence that man (tool-making) existed millions of years ago. "Scientists" have given theories that are widely accepted but cannot be repeated and verified in a Laboratory. There is just as solid evidence that mankind (the earth) is young (~6000 years). See ICR.com or the Creation Research Society for equally valid forensic / historical scientific evidence. Professionally, SunCam should avoid unproven theories!

New Engineering Ethics Course
A good ethics refresher. One syntax error on test question #3 ...an engineer who work alone...
As a frequent Visiting Board Member I have seen several very experienced engineers violate the rule of practicing outside their area of licensure or experience. This is very important in "Discipline States". Also, having been an engineer for over 30 years, I have seen a relaxation in the formal checking of calculations by peers and supervisors. This coupled with accepting computer output at face value is unfortunately resulting in more errors being missed. As a client I should not have to check calculations of my consultants. A very good short course.
