(1) Spreadsheet only works on current Excel program and not in "Open Office" alternate program or other non-Microsoft spreadsheet versions which read and write excel files. I created my own spreadsheet version in an alternate program.
(2) Building answers based on previous answers is not a good way to frame a test. One mistake results in multiple wrong answers even if you know the material.
Got 24 of 25 correct with the help of my work around.
The webpage says:
Manning-Channel software (for course 150)
Runs the Manning Formula on Excel 2007 or later
(Manning-Channel will NOT run on "OpenOffice")

I have to give this course a score of five. It is the most useful of all the Continuing Education Courses I have taken to date. I will be using your software to design canals because it is so easy to use and you can use whatever units you have. Ours are usually mixed because the forming material is in inches and feet and the flow calculations need to be in m3/s. Hydraulics is not my specialty but am currently designing irrigation canals in Haiti, and this course and your software has taken the difficulty out of it and given me confidence in my results. Good test. Its not to easy/simple, but it is a challenge and you must concentrate on every question. The excel spread sheet program has several flaws - You example say to enter (in brackets) 80 % flowing. That value does not work. An 8 must be entered. It seem to be an error on your course materiel, but easy to figure out when entering the data.
This is a quote from page 9 of the course document:
Excel Percentages
You can set Excel to display percentages as either a whole number (5=5%) or a decimal (.05=5%).
For Excel 2007:
1. Click the office button in the upper left of the screen
2. Click Excel Options at the bottom of the dropdown
3. Click Advanced
4. In "Editing Options" check or uncheck the box labeled "Enable automatic percent entry" to make the change.
If you are using another version of Excel you can use "Help" to find where to make the changes.

On Q 16 your explanation of the correct answer shows ...
Seems that you are wrong.
The reviewer challenged the correct answer to question 16 but he was incorrectly reading answer from the "Open Channel" column instead of the "Box Culvert" column. This is a box culvert problem flowing 100% full.

Good Cause (Need Excel 2007)
The information and examples were good and easy to understand. Similar to one of the other reviewers, I could not get the Excel Macro to work (I had an older Excel) and this made the class and test very difficult. I would recommend the class if you are able to use the macro

I had problems with the spreadsheet so I did many of the calculations by hand, which was okay.
In the sentence with the roughness coefficient, it should be "floodplain" and not "floodplane"

The sample problem figures shoe the input vgalues for % full in percent. They need to be in Depth divided by Height 66% = .66
Author Response: It appears that the reviewer encountered the commonly misunderstood issue of how his copy of Excel is set-up to handle percentages.
Here is a direct quote from page 9 of the course document:
"Excel Percentages
You can set Excel to display percentages as either a whole number (5=5%) or a decimal (.05=5%).
For Excel 2007:
1. Click the office button in the upper left of the screen
2. Click Excel Options at the bottom of the dropdown
3. Click Advanced
4. In "Editing Options" check or uncheck the box labeled "Enable automatic percent entry" to make the change.
If you are using another version of Excel you can use "Help" to find where to make the changes."

Senior Structural Engineer-Hydro-Bridge Design
This is a great course. The substantial engineering course material is well outlined and detailed for the subject discussed. The Excel spreadsheet eliminates the tedious task of repetitive calculations, while quickly allowing scenario explorations and "what ifs" easily. The examples in the course material and all test questions are real-world situations that I personally experienced in doing hydro-hydraulics-pipe or pond designs or analysis. The course material is concise and eliminates the need to go to my 4-5 hydraulic text books and other material!! Would have been nice to have the Excel sheets 40 years ago. The course is of great value and well written, and I did learn new material.

I thought the course was very good overall. The spreadsheet is great and is a very useful tool in my daily tasks as a Drainage Engineer. My only comment would be regarding clarifying assumptions on the test questions. For instance, assuming people will know what "calcium buildup" is and how rough it is. Other than that, great course.
Author Response: Based on this reviewer's comment, question 18 has been rewritten to include the Manning roughness coefficient as a given.

Questions I had about the Fluid Mechanics were answered clear and precisely.

This, as with the Manning Formula for Pipes is clear, practical and the spreadsheet is very useful. I also took the Darcy-Weisbach flow in pipes to get a more complete background in calculating fluid flows and losses. I believe I have a working knowledge for this subject now.

Impressive
The spreadsheet alone is well worth the time in this class. He goes over all of the Mannings variables and provides a decent discussion on their relationships. This class is an excellent refresher course.

My client liked it
I showed the software to a client who is also an engineer and she signed up for the course immediately. It gives me the ability to explore lots of options and a simple print of the page is all I need to document the calculations.

First of all no criticisms - None.
The course was very complete, I had worked problems in US Customary and Metric Units but for the first time in 50 years of my PE career I found English Units.
The excel sheet is super, and will be used a lot.

This is an excellent course. It relates extremely well to problems I encountered in my 40+ years of experience. The body of the test was very well organized and extremely clear. The questions were very interesting with global scenarios. SunCam is the best continuing education course provider I have used.
