I really enjoyed this course; just what I needed, an introduction to railroad engineering. Written in a very succinct yet engaging way, thoroughly enjoyable and a great primer. As a former highway engineer, I found the discussions on geometry particularly interesting. I recommend adding a bit about rail design itself (different cross-sections). Thank you!

SunCam Course # 326 - Railroads - An Introduction - Well written course about a specialty topic I encounter every day and took for granted until now. Especially interesting is understanding why there are special drainage requirements for railroal track. The rationale for grade separation where rail and highway cross is another important learning point since public safety is an integral component of engineering design. Much of my work takes place in rail-served chemical processing facilities. Now I understand track and roadbed terminology.

The author included questions in such a manner that the answer could be debated. His reference to surfacing the rail was deemed false. He said it was the ballast that was surfaced. I maintain that the ballast is used to bring the rail to a good surface.

Several errors in the paper. AREA is now (and has been for centuries) AREMA. The use of the terms Railbed and Trackbed are not relevant.
No good paper should mention railroads without emphasizing safety around the track. I would be glad to provide a edit of the paper.
