I would recommend this class to engineers involved in the design, permitting, or inspection of such facilities. The proper design and installation of a septic system is essential for one to function correctly. The course material, which covered sizing regulations from several states as examples is well presented and covers the design aspects of gravity and pumped septic systems quite well. The biggest item to highlight here is that many states have different rules. In the SW states like CO, NM, and AZ, the installation of Chambers is significantly different than what this class depicts. Many other guidelines are different. It is a very basic overview of how a Septic System works. Maybe the class needs to be updated to more current codes.

The course was very good. I only found one mistake on the drainfield size equation on page 34. The number should have been 0.65 rather than 0.60. I also could not figure out how the overall size of 32' x 69.5' on page 35 was determined. I used what I thought was used to figure it out and came up with 32' x 70' so this would be a lot more helpful if it was clarified.

I had septic tank built in my lake house and went over it with design engineer, but information given here makes this mechanical engineer wanting more and as soon as I finish looking at Texas code and get soil testing lab lined out, I think I can design better system than anyone can and on my next project, I am going to do it.

Good Overview for Design
Good overview, but the last sample problem needs to be expanded. It is as if you bring the student along and then just do a quick dump to bring it to closure without adequate detailed explanation.
Note: The Equalizer 36 specs provided on page 34 for step 6, are needed on pages 27-28 for that step 6 (otherwise it was hocus- pocus).

This course provided a basic yet thorough coverage of the concepts and systems applicable to this technology. Realistic design examples were provided. Coverage of the theory and equations underlying the loading rates would have been beneficial but was not provided. Some jurisdictions base design on direct calculation using specified equations. Overall, I would recommend this course.

Excellent course. The course material fully explains and details each component and it's function in designing a septic system. Real world outline of site specific projects that explain and show the CORRECT sequence of steps in designing the system. Forget about going out to websites to learn explicit sequences in designing the different septic systems...this course circumvents that continuous and confusing loop. Septic system design is new to me, which required my seeking clarification from the author. Author was extremely helpful and answered my questions in a expedient time. The author's recommendation to use state codes in design can not be overemphasized. Course material makes a great reference manual and is up-to-date. A great value.

The only criticism I have is that the final email that sends me my results has a link to print the certificate that doesn't seem to behave as advertised. It states that you can click the link and view or download your certificate, but when I tried it for the last two courses I took I got a Perl programming language script as a download. Useless to me. I was able to contact the provider and request that they send me a true PDF file which they did but it was extra effort and time on my part that seemed unnecessary when attaching a PDF file to an email is common business practice these days.
SunCam Response: We have a very automated system that generates certificates and test results on the fly using Pearl Script. This automation is why we are able to sell a 4-hour course for $19.95 instead of the $150-$200 charged by our competitors. When Pearl Script is disabled on a customer's computer (about 1 in 1000) we happily download the certificate and email it as an attachment. We do not ask you to change your security settings to do business with us and we will do everything in our power to work with the limitations that you impose but we cannot relieve you of the added effort that it takes to ask for help.

I'm not complaining here, just trying to be helpful. On page 28 there is a sample calculation for the drain field size. One example is for three trenches at 76 ft. long and the other example is 5 trenches at 44 ft. long. You might want to edit the trench length in the second example to 44 ft. so it makes sense.
I did think the course was a good overview and had practical value.
SunCam Comment: You caught a typo that escaped the author, SunCam and several hundred engineers who previously completed this course. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

The last part of the course seemed rushed. It did not explain how 2 foot of head was chosen to calculate the orfface flow or why it was calculated as it was. Also skipped explaining the 13:1 sizing or explaining if the correct number could be on either side of that ratio or had to be under.
Author Response:
The 2 foot of head is used to provide positive pressure on the low-pressure dosing pipe. Too much pressure can potentially damage the drainfield (you don't want an "Old Faithful" geyser in your drainfield) but too low a pressure can allow the pipe to become obstructed over time. The 13:1 sizing came from a study performed on low pressure systems and was determined to be the ideal ratio for maximum performance. I got this info from an engineering conference that I attended years ago but I don't remember who conducted the study. However, I've never seen anything to contradict the ratio. Nor have I had any problems with permitting low pressure systems using this ratio and, better yet, I've never had any of my system designs fail... and I've probably designed over a hundred low pressure systems for commercial and public septic systems... so it's been well tested. :-) And, yes, the 13:1 ratio is the ideal but rarely reached. You should use the design that comes closest to the ratio... either above or below... that provides the best system that fits on your site.

Nice topic overview with good example problems. The photos of the components were a valuable addition to the schematics. I would have liked to know more about how the seasonal high water table level is determined and who is the deciding body.

This was a course that was interesting and presented in a straightforward and logical way. I enjoyed learning about septic systems and am going to try to make sure no roots get into mine. It is probably Mission Impossible here as I have trees on three of four sides, but I will cut down 1 foot with a sharp spade all the way around the system in the spring while the ground is soft, thus severing any shallow roots.

Author Response: When I requested and received the list of "typos and math mistakes", a detailed response was sent to the customer further explaining each. It has been a while since I designed a septic system. Typically the county tells you what you need. However, the county does not always think the way the Engineer does. Very general course. States vary widely in requirements. I live off the coast of NC and requirements are vary different from those in the western part of the state.

Good review material for all civil/site engineers. Future participant should be made aware of the fact that each state has a code for septic system design that has to be followed. Sometimes, the local county/municipal health departments (who are more familiar with the local site conditions and limitations) may add additional requirements for the "individual subsurface disposal system design".

Excellent, with one comment
Course was great & staff was very helpful. Rating would be 4.7 stars if possible. Only comment was that the detail on the absorption bed seemed a little unclear. What was the 6" dimension between the green lines?
I wish had this material before I worked on my 1st system. I might add a little about the process of getting the soil evaluation done. I was able to do everything with my android device and google chrome.
