A very good, direct course on columns and base plates. I learned some new concepts which were not covered in undergraduate texts in Strength of Materials. I noticed something which caught my attention before in other courses: This may just be a personal thing but I am used to seeing S, Sigma, or Tau for stress symbols so to see F or Phi x F results in a little confusion every time causing a slight hesitation when time is limited.

There is so much information in this course that it lends itself to be presented in two parts. In two parts the information, formulas and examples can be provided to help a non structural engineer to get the full benefit.
Several questions use the wording " following statements" indicating more than one answer. In fact several questions had more than one answer. Yet the answer sheet would only accept one answer. This should be reviewed.
Also with all the formulas consider providing a page that clearly defines what each letter or symbol means.

Very Very good. However, One thing - I think the wording on the concrete confinement for the base plate was a little tricky. I missed the question, but if I had used the SCM manual I would have got it right because they state the equations were based on the "full area". To me, this indicates that the base plate foot print will match the concrete's mating surface.
