I thought this was an excellent case study. Prior to this course, I was unaware of any issues related to the Citicorp Tower, probably because nothing ever blew up or collapsed. Goes to show the importance of double checking your work and challenging your assumptions. Interesting ethical quandaries, indeed.

As a lifelong New York City resident the Citicorp Building has been a constant in my day to day experiences since its opening. Yet I had no idea about the risky design issues surrounding its early history. As a mechanical engineer, while I have faced ethical issues, they have generally not been quite so dramatic. This brief course is not only revealing, but I found it riveting!

Makes one think of how to coordinate all the ethical matters, and how to deal with conflicts. Should consulting engagements have a separate ethical evaluation by third party and/or peer reviews for such novel engagements... it is hard sometimes to see the entire picture when in the middle of all the details of an exciting and novel assignment. And, did the government miss this too - why have government check plans if they fail to find any overarching flaws - again the focus lacked an overall assessment of the novel design and to manage risks by all parties.

This is a good example of doing the right thing, especially when it is hard. The first responsibility of an engineer is to determine what can go wrong, and to allow for that, that is not always easy to do. This is why engineers need to be licensed.

The course captures the nuances of ethics. A pursit might say that given the fact that the building was nominally unsafe, why weren't both the building and the buildings in adjacent blocks evacuated for the months during which the building was being made safe? Does the effect of the TMD actually mitigate all of the understrength? It's unclear from the text whether the building was actually safe under just gravity loads.

The course was relevant and interesting. It is a good case study for ethics that I had not heard before. The fall of the World Trade towers adds attention to this story. The course was clear about the roles of all the parties. It included enough technical information to be interesting to engineers.
Question on test - LeMessurier’s firm's approval of the switch to bolts instead of welds also included the mistake of the calculation of the number of bolts. For that reason, the approval was not correct at the time.

This course was very interesting as the ethical issues were somewhat grey. In 1977 I had been out of college six years and was one year before starting my own structural engineering business in 1978. Cudos to the student engineer who discovered the problem. I doubt that I would have. Cudos to LeMessurier for blowing the whistle on himself.
