Every building is at risk of being subject to some form of "act of God" by natural forces on the earth. Sometimes these forces are predictable based on expectations developed by past history. This course covers some of the basics of understanding the codes and standards that have put the responsibility of designing buildings to protect against wind and seismic events on the shoulders of professional engineers while at the same time outlining duties and responsibilities of facility owners, code authorities, equipment manufacturers and installing contractors.

I was hoping this course would teach something about securing items for wind loads. Wind speed, surface area, exerted force, etc. Nothing like that. Only states the obvious that is our responsibility to design for it.

This is an appropriate one-hour course for these two topics that are important to all professional engineers. The scope of the topics is wide, but the material is presented with enough resources listed for further study by those interested. The discussions on possible design liability issues present a convincing argument that the topics should not be treated lightly by the designer.
