The course is very well organized and structured. The test was very thorough and fair. I think itvmet 2 of the 3 objectives listed but am not sure it could prepare someone for a software purchase. I’ve been involved with 2D and 3D CAD systems for many years and the criteria around usage and selection are extensive and complicated. I’m sure this is similar especially in ways to integrate it with CAD for project use. Overall I felt the course was very worthwhile and am glad I completed it.

The test was tougher than i thought it would be but it was a good class. It could use some updating for newer technology (and Sept 11 was more than 10 years ago).
This course was last updated in late 2015. While there have been some new technologies introduced, the products and technologies mentioned in this course are still in use today. For example, the use of drones has enabled imagery to be captured at higher resolutions, but the principles for data capture are the same as those listed in this course. If you can e-mail me directly with specific technologies that you think would be important to include, then I will be glad to look into incorporating them. This course is examined periodically, and will be updated again when appropriate. The reference to September 11th is mentioned in a side bar, and merely discusses the hindsight observed around the ten year anniversary of the event.

Excellent for someone with some basic familiarity. Some of the language and terms may tend to lose someone with no survey, COGO, or basic GIS or CAD experience. An active Civil Engineer should easily have this familiarity.

Difficult but Good Overview of a Very Complex Topic
This is more of an overview for someone who has some knowledge in these areas than it is an intro. The author does a good job of describing how these systems work and introducing the terminology for a very complex topic.

Although I agree that this information is vital in today's engineering, this course was a bit difficult for someone who rarely deals with the subject. I will say that I did learn a lot, especially while I was using the Test Worksheet to prepare for the test. But, I am sure that I will still be doing a lot of lookup when I run into any of the many different types of files, and terminology involved. Thank you for the lesson pdf that I can keep. I am sure that I will refer to it in the future.

This course would benefit from inclusion of more actual examples of GIS/GPS information to engineering applications such as creation of maps, facilities design, field inventories, service trouble shooting, service restoration and field inventories of facilities and land-based features.

History + Loads of File Format Info
A bit of a disappointment as no usage problems. Rather as titled just "History + Loads of File Format Info". Then again am not a user rather have a dilettante interest. Having said that there is some key info relative to CAD formatting for use in GPS software. To extend this some interfacing with 3D plant drawing software ala SmartPlant would have been interesting to see as CAD is becoming more for componentry with its geographic layout use on the way to becoming legacy software.

GIS Test
The price was very good ($20) and it was a good bang for the buck. Some sort of interactive course would be more suitable for GIS, but would be expected to cost more than just a text reading course.
However, I think more graphics and examples would have enhanced the text for the course.

This was a fun course. Some of the information was confusing due to the similarity of terminology, but that goes with the territory of the subject. Perhaps some of the terms could be expanded to identify and explain their differences in purpose and use.

Jargon heavy
How you look at this course will depend on what your expectations are. It does cover the history well and is a good coverage of some of the file formats. However as an occasional user of the system I was hoping for more emphasis on how to navigate the system and to navigate the different interfaces I find in some counties - from that standpoint I was disappointed. It took me longer to do the course than expected and I will not long remember much of the jargon since I don't use those files. For a computer science person that will be dealing with the internals of GIS this may have been more appropriate.

Old PE
Lived through the development of the geospatial data management systems and was active in putting one or another to use in municipal infrastructure inventory. Having to interface with state dot systems of different types was necessary, also. So this course was a historical review. It was not useful to relate to what would work best in certain circumstances and what is about to be abandoned in the adoption of modern database management.

TMI - To Much Information! Answer to Questions often was based on what was not stated in lieu of what was stated. Example. I never saw NavSTAR anywhere in the text. I have no idea what the satellite network was called! And I didn't see it in the course. Questions were difficult often without a reference in the course close enough to eliminate doubt! In my opinion this course needs some work to make the reader feel more certain about his answers. There is a LOT of info here, I had to reread sections several times to extract enough info to make an educated guess at some of the questions. Negative comments asside, I enjoyed the course as it had some great info, but had to work to hard for that info. Much of the info could have been filtered as it was too detailed for the purpose of the course.

Seems like half was about file-types. After reading the whole course and re-reading sections, it was still difficult to find answers to questions on the test. My prior experience with GPS was little help.

A little confusing
Need to consider that some of the detailed file formats, etc., may not be intuitively obvious to older generation engineers. However, it was a good overview for something I had relatively NO knowledge at all.

Agree with a previous reviewer that course is a good introduction to GIS and GPS information and concepts.
Suggest clearer-simpler definitions and show examples of "rasters" and "vector" files. I'm still not clear on those. Too much verbiage on file extenstions.

informative, but a little tricky on the questions. assumed one knew a little more than given in the text.
Author Response: The questions were designed to ensure you read and understood the material.
As a hint, Questions 8 and 11 are the most incorrectly answered. All of the questions however, are derived from information presented in the text.

Very Bad Course
Seems as this document was written as a classroom paper (assignment). Very poorly written for what the intent of the course is. Rather than a broad overview of the topic (that is the intent), irrelavent details are provided and tested that should mean nothing to a person trying to get intro to this topic.

This is a good overview of the subject. It gets pretty detailed in the description of computer files and programs. It would be helpful to have the glossary of terms readily available since there are a lot of program/file names that are hard to remember. Definitely leaves you with the conclusion that you need GIS/GPS specialists to properly use this technology.

Brings clarity to commonly heard (but often not fully understood) GIS/GPS terms and concepts
A good overview of GIS/GPS terms and concepts for a "consumer" of the output of the various tools.
Consider adding a section on "what can go wrong" or "what to ask" when using GIS tools -- things that would affect the integrity of output.

Alphabet Soup
The course was OK and I learned a few things I wasn't aware of; but, I question the need for the general Professional Civil Engineer ( project manager or designer) to retain memory of all the abbreviations and "alphabet soup" history of GIS/GPS! Author is obviously very knowledgeable in this area. If it was a bit less history and a bit more everyday practical to a Professional Engineer who supervises highly skilled computer oriented designers it might be better?
