I felt this course was well written and informative. I would like to have seen at least 1 example presented with real numbers. However this is continuing education not a semester long course on a college level. The one review I read that rated it a 1 star I respectfully disagree. We all do not work in the most cutting edge environment of a lab with NASA type resources. I have found that the methods presented here are acceptable for most applications.

Excellent overview of fatigue analysis. Thorough without getting bogged down in details, but in-depth enough to emphasize all the major considerations for safe design.

Review of: Mechanical Fatigue of Metals
The course focused on archaic technology - Marin, Joseph, “Mechanical Behavior of Engineering Materials, Prentice Hall,” 1962. I never encountered it in nearly forty years in aerospace. It appears that Gerald O. Davis is a metallurgist with little actual experience in designing for fatigue resistance, only what he has read about.
Mr. Davis appears to have experience only in rotating beam fatigue testing, which may be appropriate in some situation but was almost never used in my laboratory which I ran for 20 years in a major aerospace company. Axial loading is far more common. And his assertion that “Mean stresses, SMEAN, occur frequently in actual applications but these are most often omitted in common lab tests. p12/37) is simply wrong.
I could continue but it would be churlish.

Course had a lot of good information in it. It also reinsure me of having to adjust factors in making parts to increase life and reduce fatigue.

A very informative course which balances analytic life prediction methods and observed fatigue failure characteristics. A second course would be a good follow-on.

This was a fantastic overview on Fatigue. I recommend taking it and recommend that the Author make a second version that augments this with example problems to solve on the quiz. I'd be happy to participate.
